Flower Picker

Flower Picker is an original contemporary oil painting on canvas by Cape Town artist Amy Ayanda Lester, exploring themes of memory, impermanence, and emotional transformation. Using imagery of family members and botanical references sourced from found books, this body of work marks an important development in Amy’s practice as she moves toward larger scale oil paintings.

It depicts a hand holding a freshly cut flower. In the background there are vague images of body parts and botanicals. This work in its simplicity honours my lineage to the flower growers of Cape Town while also holding space for a collective grief that is felt on a generational level for many Coloured South Africans.

Created in her home studio in Cape Town, South Africa.
